Flavors of Home

Co & I have been moaning a bit about the lack of black beans, crisco, maple extract, and (get this) molasses here. Especially molasses! We’re SURROUNDED by sugar cane fields! OK, we have it on 3 sides since 1 side is chock full of ocean, but still! you would think they would be able to use some of the cane for molasses. I mean, it’s one of the ingredients to Rum, for pete’s sake. It’s really hard to make a good ginger snap without it, but Colette’s doing her best. I’m encouraging her by eating whatever she makes. I’m such the good hubby.
But we found a store in Melbourne called USA Foods that has some of what we’re missing. We can now get Crisco (good ol’ american fat, yum), canned chiles, black beans and even Jell-O! Life is good.
Had to take the bike into the shop today. It kept stalling on me on the way home and has been running rough. Hopefully, they’ll get it all fixed up.
Tomorrow night we host the State of Origin game betwen Queensland and New South Wales. Go Maroons! (personally, I would hate to be called a maroon, but it’s australia and they’re not even embarrased wearing extremely tight shorts)
We also found out there is an organization for Americans in Australia in Brisbane that held a 4th of July picnic on Sunday. Unfortunately, we missed it. We celebrated it by buying sneakers and going to see Shrek 2.
