Today’s big news, of course, is the bombing in London. On a purely personal note, it was rather amazing that 20 minutes after I found out (about 8:30 pm) I was talking to Colette who’s in Rochester on the phone and we were both watching television coverage. It’s just incredible that 2 people in different countries on different sides of the world can see real time images of a disaster in a third country.
On to more mundane issues…
The Cricket games have already busted! Not enough players signed up so we weren’t able to form a team. Rats!
Another amazing tidbit is the prevelance of US culture here in Australia. Everyone knew it was the 4th of July this week and there was even a big article in the Brisbane paper about US expats who gather and celebrate. I was in the pharmacy (uh, chemist) on Tuesday and the clerk was telling a guy next to me that it was the 5th of July and he said “Yes, the day after independence day” and she, of course, knew exactly what he was talking about. If you ask Americans about Australia, they’ll tell you about kangaroos, koalas and maybe Steve Irwin!
One week to go before Colette returns. I guess it’s time to clean.
