One of our Australia employees is planning on moving to the US. To help her transition I put together a quick cheat-sheet on converting rational measurements into America’s quaint units. I thought I would share:
2.54 cm = 1 inch
12 inches in a foot
5280 feet in a mile
1 kilo = 2.2 pounds
3 teaspoons = 1 tablespoon
2 tablespoons = 1 ounce
4 tablespoons = 1 placesetting
4 fluid ounces = 1/2 cup
16 fluid ounces = 1 pint (mmm, pints)
32 ounces = 1 medium soda
10 medium sodas = 1 day off from school
2 cups = 1 pint (mmm, more pints)
8 pints = 1 gallon (8 pints, mmmmm)
3.785 liters (as they’re spelled here) = 1 gallon
16 ounces by weight = 1 pound
14 pounds = 1 stone
25 stones = 1 edging
4 edgings = 1 lot
25 lots = 1 subdivision
10 subdivisions = 1 town
1 meter = 39 inches
38″ = my big fat belly
3 cats = 1 caboodle
2 poodles = 1 purse
30 miles per gallon = Fuel economy of our car
Dairy products are sold in pints, quarts, half-gallons and gallons but soda is sold in liters (often 2 liter bottles).
Beer is sold in ounces (usually 12 per bottle), but wine is in liters.
1st floor = ground floor
0 c = 32 f
100 c = 212 f
0 f = freakin’ cold
98.6 f = healthy
whilst = while
amongst = among
learnt = learned
aluminium = aluminum
cricket = what the?
rugby = blood donation (I guess this is the same)
